18-year-old girl commits suicide in front of the camera

During February, several variants of the following message has been seen all over facebook:

"Lindaah, A 18 yrs old girl from Texas did a Suicide On the Live cam !An Unseen Live Suicide death Video of true Lovers in the world !!(warnning for weak hearted People to watch this)"

"Rose, a 19 years old girl from New York did a Suicide in front of cam! First time a Live suicide death video of true lovers in the history on a Cam! [Warning for weak heart people to Watch]"

"Julia, 21 yrs Girl from Miami Florida killed her self before a Cam after breakup. First time a Live suicide death video of true lovers in the history on a Cam (Weak hearts dont watch)"

"Sasha, 22 yrs Girl from Chicago committed Suicide before a Cam after breakup. First time a Live suicide death video of true lovers in the history on a Cam (Weak hearts dont watch)"

As you can see, the girls name, age and location varies, but it's always the first live suicide and, there's also always a link to a cirtain application, which I have left out here. This is, of course, a scam!!!

Once you click on the Wall Post link, you are transfered to a screen that asks you to install the "Watch this Video" Facebook application:
If you agree to install the application, you must agree to give the application developer the right to: access to your basic information, post to your wall and access your data at any time. By doing this, you are giving the scammer permission to spam their message to all of your friends. You should of course never give a third party application this much access unless you are 100% sure of their intentions and authenticity. Haven't we all heard that a million times by now?
If you do proceed with the application install, you will be presented with a survey scam

The scammer's end game is to get you to complete surveys or download games to your computer. Each time someone completes a survey, they get paid. These downloads often contain viruses, trojans or other malware.

This particular scam uses a common "IQ" test in an attempt to get users to submit their cell phone number to obtain the results of the quiz. If you read the fine print on these scams, you are usually agreeing to sign up for premium services that will be billed to your phone bill.

I honestly don't know if I'm more shocked about the fact that that the inventors of the scam are so completely roothless, or that people are so rediculously stupid.
Seriously, who wants to watch a poor, deeply depressed girl die anyway?! Are they sick? Or mad? Or both?
And wouldn't you be just a little bit suspicious? The internet has been around for quite a while now and, people are still falling for these things? Wake up!
When are they gonna learn not to compromise their privacy and security, and quit spamming their friends with these bogus apps?

I'm glad you're not one of them. After all, you're reading this because you were smart enough to figure out that there was something fishy about it all, right?

I'm sure we all do. There's definitely enough of them around to last a lifetime.

Actually I was seeking info debunking the ATTENTION A GIRL KILLED HERSELF IN FRONT OF CAM...copy/paste message.

That is, often these warnings are hoaxes and I refuse to copy/paste anything typed in ALL CAPS.

What I do when I find information as to how the scams work, is post the link. Not that it does any good. Friends will still give permissions to view a video of a roller coaster accident or man doing push ups off the Empire State building...

Koobface virus is very real, but most of the WARNING!!! messages are bogus.
